We're sorry to report that our former longtime member Doug Hoylman has passed away at 72 on Nov. 2. Doug played his last tournament here in 2009. He competed in 81 tournaments, ending with a rating of 1316. In our club's first major tournament in D.C., in 2006, he won his division with a 15-3 mark. Doug was renowned in the crossword puzzle world, winning the American Crossword Puzzle Championship six times. He worked as an actuary at Geico.

My favorite story about him involves Scrabble only indirectly. One day in 1999, he mentioned he was going to be on national TV that week, but only his voice. I had no idea what he was talking about. It turned out that his Scrabble and crossword friend Trip Payne was the third contestant on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire," which has a "call a friend" feature. Doug helped Trip win $32,000 by giving him the right answer to the question where did Ted Kaczynski teach before he became the unabomber. (Answer: University of California at Berkeley.)
