Doug was renowned inthe crossword puzzle world, winning the AmericanCrossword Puzzle Championship six times. Heworked as an actuary at Geico. Ted Gest's favorite story about him involves Scrabble onlyindirectly. One day in 1999, he mentioned he was goingto be on national TV that week, but only his voice.Ted had no idea what he was talking about. It turned outthat his Scrabble and crossword friend Trip Payne wasthe third contestant on "Who Wants To Be AMillionaire," which has a "call a friend" feature.
