WGVC-Configured R61 Laptop 201507 Edition

Support

WGVC will provide hardware support and replacement for failed parts for one year from date of acquisition. WGVC may replace failed components with refurbished or other 'non-new' but operable devices.

No support can be provided if the original default boot OS is replaced. No support is provided for 'parallel' boot partition installations, although applying such will not affect the warranty.

Boot Menu

Your WGVC R61 comes pre-installed with Linux Mint 17.1. At startup it will present a boot menu which under normal operation will boot Mint after 10 seconds if no keys are pressed. In some cases, such as a previously detected interrupted boot sequence, the R61 will not auto-boot. In such event, simply press Enter while the top menu entry is highlighted. http://media.wgvc.com/mediawiki/images/f/f0/R61-BootMenu-cropped.jpg

WGVC R61 Desktop

After booting, the machine will auto-login to the WGVC Desktop. For users willing to navigate the Application menu (in the lower left hand corner) this will provide access to a wide variety of useful applications.

A customized toolbar on the lower right hand side allows you to start the most frequently used features with a single click.

Password

Certain operations will prompt for a password, which for this edition is wgvc2015. Because this password is publicly known, sensitive information should not be stored on these devices without choosing a more secure password. For details on this procedure contact support@wgvc.com.

WGVC R61 Toolbar

All Toolbar launchers are activated with a single-click.

System Monitor

Shows CPU Busy fraction in bright blue, I/O wait in darker blue. Click to open a full-featured system monitor.

Screensaver

The screensaver is an add-on feature enabled on Enhanced WGVC laptops. The screensaver is disabled by default, to enable:

  1. Launch a terminal window from the toolbar.
  2. Start the screensaver by entering xscreensaver
  3. (If desired) iconify the terminal window.
  4. Launch the screensaver display by clicking the toolbar icon.
  5. The screensavers will change randomly on a ten-minute cycle.
  6. Screensavers are terminated by mouse or keyboard input and will resume after 10 minutes of inactivity. Close the terminal window opened in Step 1 above or reboot the machine to disable reactivation of screensavers.

The screensavers load images from a dedicated partition which takes up most of what would otherwise be free hard drive space.

Zyzzyva

Launches the Zyzzyva word judge and study program. It may prompt for a password when launched, if so enter wgvc2015.

Input Lockout

In cases where the laptop is being used as a display driver, it may be desirable to lock out keyboard or trackpad/trackpoint input. Hitting the Input Lockout launcher will disable native input devices after a 10-second delay, during which time you can configure the display as desired. To re-enable the input devices, connect a mouse or other pointer to a USB port and hit the Input Lockout launcher to toggle inputs back to the enable state. You can also simply reboot the laptop.

XTerm

Launches an Xterm for command line operations.

Browsers

Launch either Firefox or Chromium, or both.

Update Manager

Can generally be ignored.

Volume control

Seldom used.

Network Connections

Left-click to view available network connections. You may be prompted for a password when configuring a network connection. Read the dialog carefully to be sure whether you are being asked for a network key or the laptop password (wgvc2015).

Power Status

Displays battery charging status.

Collins Zyzzyva

If installed, a Collins Zyzzyva icon appears on the desktop. Double-click this icon to launch (for access to CSW15 functions).
